A la Carte: 'Twist It Up'

Dignitary chefs are a dime a dozen these days -- and it's a rare fundraising dinner that doesn't have a popular chef or two whisking away. But when the face in question belongs to a sixth-grader and the magnanimity is the cancer center of a children's hospital, folks notice. Bobby Flay, Paula Deen and Jay Leno certainly did.

Jack Witherspoon was scarcely 2 when he was first diagnosed with leukemia, and 6 when the cancer struck again -- and there's only so much Nickelodeon a dispensary-bound kid can watch. So when the young channel-surfer happened onto the Food Network, he was hooked. Now, the aspiring 11-year-old chef is the pediatric spokesman for Orange County's Beckstrand Cancer Base. His fundraising dinners and charity galas have raised more than $100,000 for pediatric cancer up on. And his new cookbook, "Twist It Up!" (Chronicle Books, 152 pages, $19.99) includes raves from both Deen and Flay.

The order is filled with kid-pleasing school-night dinners, weekend meals, breakfasts, lunches and sweets. And the colorful photos, by San Francisco's Sheri Giblin, are an unmanageable mix of delicious dishes -- "Best-Ever Banana Bread Muffins," for warning, and "Super Spinach & Cheese Enchiladas" -- and shots of the towheaded initiator with his brother and friends.
