HPV, the android papillomavirus, is best known for causing cervical cancer and genital warts, but it also causes cancers at the back of the throat, tonsils and infrastructure of the tongue, says study author Maura Gillison, a professor at the Ohio Report University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

In her new study, Gillison found that 7% of Americans have a stylish oral infection with HPV, according to test results from 5,579 Americans ages 14 to 69. That's higher than Gillison had expected, she says. Her look provides the first major one of oral HPV infection rates for the whole country.

Voiced HPV infection is nearly three times as common in men, affecting 10.1% of them and only 3.6% of women, according to the over, conducted as part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 2009-10 Inhabitant Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The study doesn't legitimate why HPV infection is more common in men, Gillison says. However, doctors have long distinguished that throat cancers are far more common in men than in women.
