Less than two years after a six-notable advance from the general fund was needed to keep it solvent, the Fort Frye Specific school district's food services division is in the black.

A more-than $70,000 default in 2009 led the board of education to make the controversial decision to charter an outside contractor to oversee food services in 2009. That arrangement met with at daggers drawn from the community and workers. A food services committee was formed to deliver the issues and numerous changes were made. Federal stimulus funds allowed the food services unit to regain its financial footing and this year, it's projected to take in slightly more coins than it spends.

Zalmanek served on the food services commission, which recently dissolved - a positive sign, she said, since it's no longer needed. She first became affected with the issue prior to her election to the board in 2009, citing a perturb over providing hot meals to students who might not otherwise get them during the day.
