The few exceptions have tectonic origins where slab movements have lifted the resonant the briny base on the outside.

In 1842 Charles Darwin published his first treatise, The Design and Codification of Coral Reefs. There he set out his theory of the array of atoll reefs, an thought he conceived during the voyage of the Beagle. His theory was that atolls were formed by the uplift and subsidence of the Mother earth's crust under the oceans. Darwin theory sets out a concatenation of three stages in atoll configuration. It starts with a fringing reef forming around an departed volcanic atoll as the islet and bounding main bottom subsides. As the subsidence continues, the fringing reef becomes a impediment reef, and fundamentally an atoll reef.
