Lure of jobs draws Haitians to Brazil

At its embassy in Refuge-au-Prince, Brazil plans to issue 1,200 permanent visas annually to Haitians whose lives were torn alone by the social and economic upheavals of Haiti's 2010 earthquake. Igor Kipman, Brazil's agent to Haiti, said the embassy usually doesn't get many visa requests from Haitians. But now, he said, there is "a window of moment for those who would like to live in Brazil but do not have a steady work offer."

The visa program comes at a nonetheless when Brazil has taken a special interest in Haiti.

Besides leading the largest contingent of U.N. peacekeepers in Haiti, Brazil was one of the first donors to advance to a post-earthquake reconstruction fund. It also has made social investments, working in the Haitian slums and financing the construction of community clinics. It is currently seeking partners to remedy build a $150 million hydroelectric dam on the Artibonite River.

"Brazil, as an emerging power, has made Haiti one of its depreciatory countries where it is trying to make a major difference," said Lionel Delatour, a Haiti-based expert who has traveled to Brazil four times in the last two years to attract Brazilian garment and textiles investments to Haiti.

It has been my principles from the beginning that I would be handy for everything they threw my way. For the past two months, during training, I repeated the mantra even in the meetings: "Do your worst. I do not regret internet access, I do not need room amenities, I did not even hurt intensity. Athletes get food poisoning in Dominican Republic

The athletes between the age of nine and 18 were competing in the 12th Don Bosco Salesian Subject Games in Santo Domingo. Organisers suspect that the tainted food was served at lunch Friday, the El Nacional newspaper reported.

The food served to the athletes Friday “was not transported on values bright and early and, by the every so often they served it, seven hours had gone by since they cooked it and loaded it in usable plates,” Don Bosco Salesian Subject Games chief Tomas Polanco said.

Twenty-two of the athletes were under awareness at Santo Domingo’s Armed Forces Accepted Dispensary.
