Desert Food Web

In the six years the North Midland Household Center has held its Call of the Wild fundraising event, community fervour has only increased.

So has the event's importance to the center.

Friday night brought another popular edition, drawing more than 500 attendees plus dozens of volunteers and vendors.

NMFC trustees chairman John LaFever said the blend of sit-down dinner, kids' activities, vendor displays, lodge and silent auctions and other prize drawings and events, typically nets the crowd $20,000 to $22,000 or so - money that helps support the Center's many programs.

The anyhow was aided by $17,000 in sponsor donations; "Some wrote a check," LaFever said. "Some made a bestowal (of an item) for a prize or the auction."

It all counts.

"(Cuts in) state funding the last one of years have just killed us," said LaFever. Most recently, he said, the center fallen $56,000 in governor's discretionary funding. "We have scaled back programs, but haven't cut any yet." Teen gatherings on Friday nights, for benchmark, have been cut from weekly to biweekly, he said.
