I’d like to moved to a letter to the editor on Jan. 6 entitled "Overblown security concerns spoonfeed cheer," which described how a couple bringing holiday cookies to inmates at the Panama Burg Work Release Center on State 390 were threatened with a felony by truncheon there. The female visitor had a cellular phone in her purse and questioned what peril cell phones pose to the public if allowed in prisons. The author suggested prison staff should have some sensitivity training and holiday cheer.

I am the chief of care at the Work Release Center. Public safety is the Department of Corrections’ top precedence. There are rules and laws that govern our operations to ensure the public’s safeness. One of those laws is that cellular phones brought into any Florida prison is a third-decidedly felony. The letter questioned what risk cell phones and recording devices are to customers safety. Inmates use cell phones in prison to further their criminal activities, to portend and harass witnesses, and worst of all, to torment their victims. That is why cell phones in reformatory are just as much contraband as weapons and drugs. They are such a threat that we have purchased dogs specifically trained to suggestion out cell phones in our facilities.
