GREENSBORO — The discount supermarket shackle Aldi will open a store in New Garden Square next year.

The grocery department store will open sometime in 2013 at 1507 New Garden Road, said Kendra Shaw, the associates’s Salisbury division director of operations.

The store joins a bustling shopping field in northwest Greensboro that has seen continued expansion in recent years. Untrained Market, Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods stores are nearby.

Shaw said Aldi chooses locations based on residents density, traffic patterns, proximity to competition and property costs.

“We yearning to be conveniently based where Aldi shoppers are located,” she said.

Founded in Germany, Aldi has more than 9,500 stores worldwide, mostly in Europe. The supermarket concatenation opened its first store in the U.S. in 1976. It now operates more than 1,000 stores in 31 states from Kansas to the east littoral.

Aldi, short for Albrecht Discounts, was co-founded by brothers Karl and the in Theo Albrecht, who also own Trader Joe’s.
